This I suppose would qualify as my "Opus 1". I had the idea on the way to work, and it stuck with me all day, so when I got home I wrote it down. At that time I was using Encore for notation, and simply wrote the score for piano, with lyrics underneath and guitar tabs above. I consider this and "In My Dreams" to be sister songs, a pair of proof-of-concept pieces to determine whether I could actually write decent lyrics. It ended up being the third song I recorded in GarageBand, after Staff Meeting and She Said.
Jonathan Coulton wrote "You Ruined Everything" for his daughter, and so I used his music to write this for mine. She was 8 as of the time it was recorded, and has always been determined to be among the first group of humans to visit Mars.
lyrics
Everyone watches as you're racing
Across the sun. They can't avoid the glare.
None of us sees that star approaching.
It's nebulous. It could be anywhere.
There's no rush to know where you'll set down.
You'll know you've found your home when you get there.
All the while you run those rings around us,
You should smile, and orbit us aware
That we'll be the planet to your moon,
The gravity for the well we share.
Your trajectory's chaotic, but we'll still be
Right behind you when you get there.
Watch out for asteroids there. Cyborgs and evil droids there.
Black holes and empty voids where you're alone.
Though solar winds get stormy, our fusion stays all warmy.
Collect some stardust for me while exploring
On your own. Discovering it all,
The great unknown. Make us all aware.
We'll be hanging on your every word,
So tell us all about it when you get there.
